Immigration

Our bags are packed & friends greeted
Rehomed our dogs and cats
Furniture sold or given away
Brand new cars returned to the bank
Years of tracks just swept away
Everything left even the house by the sea
Grandmother we greeted only we do not see you again
Because it’s safer there
But our hearts are hurting
Because we want to get away from the crime
Get away from the anxiety
Moving to a better place
Another chance for our children
We want to get away from the murder
Flee from death
There must be peace somewhere else
Or a place where we belong
We want to get away from the anxiety of not sleeping at night
Get away from the worry of driving during the day
We want to be able to live in peace and lead a good life
We do not want live in a dark South Africa anymore
Our house is empty the garden still looks beautiful
In weeks from now, everything is thawed
Family greeted and cell phone stopped
Our children’s lives are turned upside down
But the visas are right after years of waiting
So much money was paid and then the day came
Our life is in a suitcase our hearts are in glass
Our voices fell silent
We emigrate because we want to
We want to get away from the crime
Get away from the anxiety
Moving to a better place
Another chance for our children
We want to get away from the murder
Flee from death
There must be peace somewhere else
Or a place where we belong
We want to get away from the anxiety of sleeping at night
Get away from the worry of driving during the day
We want to be able to live in peace and lead a good life
We do not want anymore
Living in a dark South Africa
So our suitcases is packed the visas are ready
Tomorrow when we take off
Then we’re gone

Song by Jak de Priester

✈️ On the 11th of February 2018 we left South Africa for New Zealand. We arrived on the 13th of February, the day before Valentine’s Day.

We said our goodbyes with lots of tears and hugs. Leaving the known, our heritage, our roots and everything we love behind.

Our 4 year anniversary for New Zealand is coming up next year. We are grateful to be here and to settled down.

We love the New Zealand life ✨✨✨
