Melkkos my Favourite

The fondest memory I have, is seeing my mom standing hours in front of the stove, preparing melkkos. It’s a traditional South African dish. This dish have been passed on through generations and I am grateful for sharing it with our kids and passing it on to them.
Maybe I can add a little flavour to it like caramel or chocolate 😉

But for now here is the recipe to prepare melkkos on the stovetop.
3 L Milk
2 and 1/2 Cups of Flour
1 Cup of Sugar
200g of Unsalted Butter at Room. Temperature
10ml Baking Powder
Pinch of Salt
Cinnamon Sugar for on top
In a bowl add in the flour, baking powder, salt and butter. Rub together to form crumbs. They should look like butter bubbles made with the flour. Make sure they are seperated and not sticking onto one another.
In a pot on the stove add in the milk and sugar. Put the stove on high heat and constantly whisked so that the milk don’t burn.
Wait for about ten minutes until the milk is boiling and sugar have dissolved. Slowly add the butter and flour crumbs and mix in, whisk quickly on high for 5 to 10 minutes.
Place the stove on low heat and let it simmer with the lid on, for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Serve in a bowl and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top.
Sidenote: If the melkkos is too thick, just add more milk. You can add some more sugar to your own preferences.
